The Renewable Resources Council (R.R.C.) represents the Gwich’in participants in the management of resources in the Gwich’in Settlement Region.
The R.R.C. makes decisions and recommendations about resource management and the allocations of resources in good faith on behalf of all Gwich'in Participants and other community members.
The mandate of each R.R.C. is to “encourage and promote local involvement in conservation, harvest studies, research and wildlife management in the local community”.
R.R.C.’s are community based advisory councils created by the Designated Gwich’in Organization” (D.G.O.) in 1992 when the G.C.L.C.A. was signed. The R.R.C. is made up of up to seven (7) councilors. The councilors are elected or appointed during the D.G.O. general elections. All councilor’s terms are for two (2) years. They hold regular monthly meetings, usually the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. All meetings are open to the public. The day to day affairs of the R.R.C. are administered by an office Coordinator. The duties of the Coordinator include administration, communications, preparing for meetings, providing information to beneficiaries and community members.
The R.R.C. administers the Community Harvester’s fund and assists in the administration of the GHAP funding. The CHAP funding helps community harvesters and others who want to go out on the land. The funding can be used for camp equipment, parts and repairs, food supplies and gasoline and transportation. The GHAP program helps harvesters to make a living off the land, by purchasing equipment and supplies needed for on the land living. More information on the GHAP program can be viewed on the Gwich’in Tribal Council website.
The R.R.C. also administers funds received from the Government of the N.W.T. (R.W.E.D.) for community hunts, to assist community members who are in need of caribou meat.
